10.5.2 Upgrade Nightmare!

Last night I updated my old PowerMac G4 1.25 GHz MDD, and it went disastorous.
When it was time to reboot, it rebooted with the Setup Assistant  started.  Well I filled out the info, and it started again.  It was stuck in some sort of Setup Assistant loop.  Oddly enough, update 10.5.2 has a note that it fixes this issue.

I found this apple help doc.  I did what it said, I was hoping this would be a small issue.  The document seems to be in good detail.  So I reboot in “safe boot”.  But now I can’t click the reboot button because the mouse pointer will not move.  I tried plugging the mouse into a different usb port, I tried switch the mouse with another I had lying around, and rebooting.  No matter what I could not move the mouse.  I tried to use the tab key on the keyboard, but that did not work. I did more searching on Apple’s web site but could not find any help.

I rebooted the system and left it at the Setup Assistant screen.  I was able to SSH to the system.  I then started to look for some startup script that may be initiating the Setup Assistant.
A find command to look for files that night have to do with setup…

 find / -name "*Setup*" -print

Found this… /var/db/.AppleSetupDone.

As it turned out there are 2 files that looked like they might have something to do with this update failure, /var/db/.SoftwareUpdateOptions  and  .SoftwareUpdateAtLogout.
I renamied the files without the dot in front of them.

mv  .SoftwareUpdateOptions SoftwareUpdateOptions
mv  .SoftwareUpdateAtLogout SoftwareUpdateAtLogout

Then I rebooted the system.  The system came up alright.  I then downloaded the 10.5.2 combo updater and installed it.  Every thing seems to have gone OK.

Great finds in iTunes!

I don’t think I mention enough how much I love iTunes. The iTunes Store now has iTunes Plus, DRM free music!
Once a week or so I do some digging, to see what I can find. Here are a few links to songs I have purchased.
I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.
